Portfolio – Start-up Phase ?

Question marks are high potential growth products or business that do not yet deliver substantial benefits such as sales, cross selling opportunities, brand equity or cost reductions. A balanced portfolio contains a number of Question Marks and they require ongoing investment in R&D. Don’t cling on too long to unsuccessful Question Marks.

Portfolio – Growth Phase Rising Stars

Successful Question Marks experience high revenue growth and require substantial investment to scale to the next level. Constant innovation is required to tweak these products/services to market demands, business models may need to be adapted and marketing strategies may need to pivot.

Portfolio – Mature Phase Cash Cows

When successful rising star products & businesses enter the mature phase they generate significant amounts of free cash and direct costs of production/delivery benefit from economies of scale. A common mistake among firms is to focus too much on rising star and cash cow products to the detriment of developing a healthy portfolio of Question Marks.

Portfolio – Decline Phase Dead Dogs

All products and even industries move into the decline phase. A business that fails to innovate around the delivery of new products will also stagnate. This phase is characterised by declining sales and consolidation of industry players. The most common business mistake is the failure to retire Dead Dogs early.

Business Portfolio Matrix

A good portfolio strategy avoids over or under investing in Question Marks, ensures business goals are clear and correct KPI’s are used to track performance. Retire Question Marks and Dead Dogs where efforts to pivot these products in an alternative strategic direction are unsuccessful.
